The Author’s Family on Rhodes
The author’s great grandparents around 1914: Issac Hanan and Djoya (Rosanes/Rosales) Hanan and their children on Rhodes. The young girl standing with her hand on her mother’s shoulder is Rica Hanan Benveniste. Rica emigrated to the United States through Cuba and (married Rahamim “Robert” Benveniste) they resided in Los Angeles. Other daughters, Matilda and Sara, ended up in Seattle and Rhodesia.
Djoya (hand on her father Isaac’s shoulder) and Alegra (the baby in Djoya’s lap) were killed in the British bombing on Rhodes, and Isaac was killed on the transport on the way to Auschwitz.
The two boys pictured, Salvatore and Rafael, died young after leaving Rhodes and two older brothers Leon (the author’s grandfather) and Morris had already left for the US before this photo was taken. Leon lived in San Francisco and Los Angeles and Morris in Seattle.
